Chapter 11

He wasn't tall, maybe a couple inches shy of six feet, but he was nicely built in that lean muscled way I liked, with broad shoulders and narrow hips. His eyes were bright blue behind wire-rimmed glasses, and his tousled hair, nearly shoulder length, was golden brown or maybe dark blond. It was hard to tell under the fluorescents. What I could tell was that he was gorgeous in a geeky kind of way. He was also very young. Jesus, was he even out of high school yet?

"Who the hell are you?" Finding strange men in my kitchen at 3:00 a.m. doesn't do well for my manners. My mother would have been horrified.

"Oh, sorry." He swiped a hand against jeans-clad legs, then held it out as if expecting me to shake. "Inigo Jones."

"Jones?" I ignored the hand, which he dropped to his side.

"Yes. Kabita's cousin."

Cousin? Dammit. He was probably off limits. Not that I was interested, of course.

"She didn't tell you I was coming?"

"Er, no," I admitted. "No, she did not."

"I'm truly sorry about that. Coffee?" He held up the glass pot. I'd insisted we have a proper drip pot. I was done with instant. I didn't know how anyone could drink that stuff.

"Um, sure. I guess."

"Brilliant." He busied himself, pouring a cup for each of us. His accent was British but faint, as if he'd lived elsewhere for a long time and had mostly assimilated.

"Where did you come from exactly?" I asked as he handed me an avocado green mug that looked like it was left over from the '70s. Probably it was.

"America," he side with a wide grin that was too sexy for comfort. "Your neck of the woods."

"How do you know what neck of the woods I'm from?"

"Kabita told me you're from Portland. The Oregon one, of course." Teeth flashed again. "I recently took up residence in that fair city after six years in Seattle."

Which explained the accent or near lack of one. "I see. And you came for a visit."

"Indeed. Got in this morning, but I had errands and such. I didn't mean to wake you. My system is a little wonky at the moment."

I got it. It had taken me some time to adjust from Pacific to Greenwich Mean Time. There had been many restless nights and drowsy mornings the first couple of weeks after I'd arrived in London. "No problem. Just, uh, freaked me out a bit."

"Yeah, sorry about that."

I shrugged, not sure what else to say. "I guess you know about this place then."

"Kabita's stronghold? Rather. And her training ground, definitely. I've been known to help with training from time to time, although I'm really rather more of a tech guy. Gadgets, IT, that sort of thing."

"Oh. Interesting," I said lamely. "Are you a hunter, too?"

He snorted. "Not at all. Normal old human, I'm afraid. Kabita says your training is going well, more or less."

I winced. "Yeah. I'm kind of over it. I don't know what she expects, but beating the shit out of sandbags every day is getting old.
